Bringing History to Life

Charleston Finale The charlie Chaplins Students in Baxter Lobby for Architecture Presentation 1920s Makeup Session Derek Strahn (left) Jim L. Thompson (right) It takes an extraordinary teacher who can bring history life. In Derek Strahn and Jim Thompson’s case, they both get to help their students bring history to life right here at The Baxter. Each year in late February, students taking the AP American Studies course with Derek and Jim take over The Baxter for a day of 1920s Jazz Age Presentations. Derek, a social studies teacher, and Jim, an English teacher, co-teach the course for a more interdisciplinary style of teaching. While incorporating art, music, and drama, they encourage other ways for students to show off their skill sets and strengths. This approach to learning is most evident when the students get to choose Cultural Interest Groups in which to be involved throughout the course: architecture, art, entertainment, fads and fashions, music, and technology being the topics of interest. When the students present on their area of expertise during the 1920s Jazz Age, they invariable ask if they can do their presentations at The Baxter because of its architectural history and the helpfulness of The Baxter team. Being that The Baxter was built at the height of the Roaring Twenties, in 1929, it makes for the ideal location to relive the Age of Jazz. “There are few historical structures in Bozeman that epitomize the essence of the Jazz Age better than the Baxter,” said Jim. “Students not only learn the facts of this time period, but they can actually imagine the glamour and excitement of the 1920s.” Presentations vary each...

Montana Bride: Featured Wedding at The Baxter Ranch

Merritt + Steven In the summer of 2012 I fulfilled my lifelong dream of working on a ranch in Montana, but I had no idea all that God’s Country had in store for me. I discovered that dream led to something far greater. I met Steven at a small town BBQ fest in Absarokee, MT. He asked me to dance right as the live band went to intermission; six months later, he hopped on a flight to New Orleans, and we finally had that dance and a New Year’s Kiss. For the first two years, I affectionately referred to him as ‘Montana’ and signed my return letters as ‘Ms. Louisiana.’ With all we each had going, we were always in different places. It took us four summers to close that distance, but our Bozeman wedding marked the start of our greatest adventure yet. Our wedding brought together treasured aspects of our Catholic faith and the Native American traditions we are so blessed to share. We incorporated countless personal touches from the bridesmaids’ Pendleton shawls sewn by my Godmother, to the groomsmen’s cowboy boots and beaded bolo ties. The reception featured Louisiana cuisine and local Montana brews. There was a dance floor, and the tunes moved seamlessly from Swing Dances to Round Dances. It was truly the celebration of a lifetime. Following a beautiful Mass at Resurrection University Parish, our covenant was blessed by a timeless Pikuni (Blackfeet) ceremony. At the foot of the Rocky Mountains, we were painted by our elders in the sacred way of the Thunder Medicine Pipe Society. We were wrapped in a single blanket,...

Take Back the Night

The Baxter is a community center that hosts more than 100 events each year from weddings and holiday parties to conferences and fundraisers. Take Back the Night back is one of the many events that The Baxter is proud to collaborate on with local and non-profit organizations in Bozeman, including Montana State University, Students Against Sexual Assault, Not in Our House and the Help Center’s Sexual Assault Counseling Center. Take Back the Night is a week-long series of events held every year to protest violence, particularly sexual violence, against women. The events provide an opportunity for both men and women to come together to take a stand against violence and provide those who have been impacted with an opportunity to speak out and heal. Jack, a long-standing staff member of The Baxter, remembers participating in the Take Back the Night march in the spring of 2009 as a student attending MSU. The evening began with a rally on the steps of the Strand Union Building (SUB) at MSU. Chicks with Sticks, Bozeman’s premier bucket band, lead everyone in the march from the SUB to The Baxter. Chicks with Sticks celebrate’s life’s diversity in its many forms, and is known in the Bozeman community for being active in supporting gay and lesbian issues, women’s empowerment and other social justice work. “There was a mass of people, mostly MSU students, marching with the Montana Women’s Chorus and Chicks with Sticks down Main Street,” Jack recalls, “We walked all the way from the SUB to The Baxter where there was a Rock Against Rape Concert in the Ballroom.” Jack distinctly remembers the concert that night...

Wedding Vendor Collaboration

As you all know, Bozeman is growing. The allure of our mountain town is drawing new tourists, adventure seekers, families, and visitors alike, looking to call Montana home. These people are all drawn here for good reason as Bozeman is quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations in the Rocky Mountain West. With this new found popularity, we can’t help but get excited as it’s also becoming quite the hotspot for weddings and special events. Bozeman not only has the incredible scenery and outdoor access that draws people in, but a strong coalition of friends, families and businesses that support it. As local professionals in the wedding, event and creative industry, it’s our job to make sure people fall in love with not only their experience in Bozeman, but the community behind it all as well. That’s why we believe there is a definite need for partnership and collaboration amongst us as our (once small) Montana town continues to cultivate and grow. As some of you have heard, we have decided to start a new event for the Bozeman wedding community called The Wedding Series. These sessions will happen once a month where we bring in one area professional to chat to an intimate group of bride-to-be’s about topics that are real, relatable and worthwhile. We began this event with not only the hope of building on relationships, both new and old, but bringing innovative ideas and creative individuals together to grow alongside one another. We want to turn it into something more meaningful for brides, vendors and all those involved, in as simple and stress-free manner as...

Rocky Mountain Bride: Montana Man Makeover

What makes a mountain man? Is it their likeliness to have facial hair and a scruffy do, or the constant smell of campfire that lingers with them around town? Have you ever gone to a wedding and seen the “mountain man?” Here at RMB, we understand that you want your mountain man to look his absolute best during your special day. We are here to help and to show you that your mountain man can remain himself but impress the rest with his sharp style, good looks, and even better attitude with just a little help from our friends. Bozeman, Montana – a popular destination for a mountain man, located in the western Rocky Mountains is known for Yellowstone National Park, Hot Springs, mountains ranges, rivers, fishing, and skiing. Hours were spent in waders and water up to your waist with Tom Melvin, Bozeman local and fly-fishing guide for world-renowned Yellow Dog Fly Fishing. Tom was ready for a day with the Rocky Mountain Bride make-over team. Warming up slowly, Cali Frankovic captured the perfect images of Tom in his element, at one with nature, fishing the Madison River, just outside of Bozeman. With his southern charm, the ladies are going to be taking a second look after this transition. Tom went from luscious locks to a shorter British-styled haircut thanks to the The Loft Spa in downtown Bozeman. It was time to trade in the waders for a black classic tuxedo from local shop, After 5 and Weddings. Dressed to impress, we headed to The Baxter Hotel and Bacchus Pub located in Bozeman’s downtown historic district –...

Montana Bride: Featured Wedding at The Baxter

We were legally married in New York City in December 2013. When our church in Montana, St. James Episcopal Church in Bozeman, approved the blessing of same-sex couples, we immediately planned a blessing and reception with our families and friends—the “real” dream wedding. The Ceremony It was the best day EVER! The ceremony was beautiful, a true demonstration of love capped by Father Clark Sherman’s moving homily. It was amazing to walk down the aisle together as our families and friends looked on, and so fun to walk out to their cheers and claps. Our reception was perfect, too. We wanted to create a mix of both classic and contemporary for the wedding day. The Baxter Ballroom is a really traditional venue, and we created some whimsical charm with gerbera daisies in bright colors, cupcakes of all flavors and French macaroons. Dinner was delicious, family and friends were everywhere, and we all danced the night away in celebration of our union. It was truly unforgettable. We are so grateful to our wonderful vendors for making the whole event run smoothly and perfectly. Advice Have a point person for the day of your wedding. Someone you trust, but who does not need to be anywhere else except for making sure all the vendors have what they need and can answer any questions for you. (You will be unavailable!)
